PHN AND HOLLAND WOODS STUDENTS (AND SISTERS) CREATE FEMININE HYGIENE PROGRAM FOR SCHOOLS
PORT HURON — Sisters Cassidy (PHN junior) and Kenzie (HWMS 7th grader) Middleton recently began an initiative to support their classmates with a feminine hygiene program. This initiative was created along with their mom and PHN teacher Heather Carleton to provide free feminine hygiene products in the restrooms.
“Our mission is to eliminate lost instructional time and embarrassment over the need for menstruation products. By supplying the women’s restrooms throughout the school, our young women do not need to waste time trying to find the product they need. This essential service has been proven to increase attendance and improve young women’s self confidence.”
The team was recently recognized by Click on Detroit/WDIV broadcaster Rhonda Walker in her “Brag Book” series. This month alone, more than 500 items were donated to their nonprofit titled “The PHN at PHN” or the period hygiene network at Port Huron Northern.
“We are always so proud of students who step up and support others,” stated PHN Principal Alycia Shagena. “These girls have shown thoughtfulness and really made an impact on their peers.”
Donations can be made to Port Huron Northern monetarily or via this Amazon “wish list.” Items can also be dropped off to PHN or Holland Woods Middle schools.
