PORT HURON SCHOOLS INITIATES ANTI-VAPING CAMPAIGN
PORT HURON — Port Huron Schools has partnered with the St. Clair County Health Department to initiate an aggressive anti-vaping campaign throughout its district. On Wednesday, December 6, students at both high schools will have a live presentation from speaker Daniel Ament, from Grosse Pointe, Mich. who was the first person to receive a double lung transplant “due to what doctors attribute to vaping-related damage.” Prior to his health crisis, Ament was a state-recognized student athlete.
The health department staff will be speaking to middle and high school students in their health classes about the dangers of vaping throughout the school year. Additionally, they will work with the district to provide information, education and tips for parents through the Superintendent’s weekly e-newsletter This Week @ Port Huron Schools. Weekly distribution for the e-newsletter reaches nearly 10,000 subscribers, and is also linked to the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce’s weekly e-newsletter.
“It is important for our students and their families to be educated on vaping, so they can make safe and healthy choices,” noted Port Huron Schools Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Catherine Woolman. “Some of our students believe that vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes and we want them to understand that both are unsafe and unhealthy.”
